Drama be happening all up in gaytown!! The Alternative Theatre Company presents Dirty Secrets, written by Joe Marshall and directed by Scott O’Brien which combines numerous prevalent gay themes, including twinks, jocks, showtune divas, infidelity, appearing to be straight, age differences and even brings one of the prickliest topics: bisexuality.
Just about every character ends up making moves on every other character. However not each one of them has the purest of intentions. The play starts out painting a mostly perfect picture, but it doesn’t take long for the cracks to appear.
When we suffer a loss, it can cause us to give up all hope. Various characters grapple over possession of their hearts, egos and most importantly control. A cry for help quickly devolves into a spirited game of one-upmanship as each man pushes the others’ buttons to see how far he can go without getting caught.
I found it most fruitful to pick your favorite character of the line-up and pin all your hopes and dreams on him. Personally, I was rooting for Shane (Matt Weaver), the self-absorbed, lazy, twenty-something who has difficulty professing his love to his partner Nick (Jason Romas) and is rude and uncaring to Tom (Joe Marshall), who has recently split from his own partner and drops by for some consolation.
Like any good drama, not every character in this play gets a happy ending. The game builds up and gets more frenzied as each person will do absolutely whatever it takes to get things to go his way.
